Surfing through Life

IF YOU ever wonder whether you’ll be able and willing to pursue an active lifestyle into your later years-enlarged prostate, osteoporosis and muscle atrophy aside-take a look at the documentary Surfing for Life, airing on PBS stations beginning in April and continuing through May and June. With interviews, rare archival surfing footage and some beautiful wave photography, the one- hour film tells the story of nine incredible seniors who have pursued their passion for surfing into their 70s, 80s and 90s. But this documentary isn’t really about surfing. Instead, it’s a perfect illustration of how the fountain of youth can be found in staying active, following your passion, and having a positive outlook on life. “I used to get angry about these changes that take place in my body, because it made me look at the end of the tunnel,” says 70- year-old Fred Van Dyke. “So I had to come to terms with that. And the way I did it was to get in better shape … and now I have a positive attitude toward it.”
